Finding the Right Template
You don't have to be a web designer to develop a functional website for your company. Most importantly, the website has to be easy to navigate or else it might deter potential customers from buying your product. Many small business deal face-to-face with customers and there is no need for a website to sell products, but the website does increase your company's credibility and provides contact information and product/service information for current customers as well as potential customers.
Template websites like the ones mentioned in the links section provide professionally designed website layouts for free. This allows small business owners to use professional designs and edit them based on their needs. This may seem like a difficult task if you are not familiar with website code, but with a good template, it can be as easy as typing a document in Microsoft Word. A two great website to get free templates are Free Web Templates and Master Templates.
Now that you have your website template downloaded, you are ready to edit it and customize it for your business. The first thing you want to do is find a program to help with the creation of your website. You might already have a favorite, but we recommend Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 for $387 (PC/Mac). It is the most expensive web editing program but it will become more beneficial as your knowledge of website creation grows, so it is worth the cost. It is also very easy to use, and there are hundreds of YouTube videos designed to walk you through everything from the most basic commands to the most advanced features. Dreamweaver also offers a 30-day trial for you to test their product and decide if you like it.
If your business is on a tighter budget and you can’t afford Dreamweaver, we suggest Microsoft Publisher. This program has a very user-friendly interface, and since it is part of Microsoft Office, and most people already own it and are familiar with its features. However, Publisher is limited in its web design capabilities so we will be explaining things in Adobe Dreamweaver.
After you install Adobe Dreamweaver, the next question you will ask is likely to be, "How I load my template on Adobe Dreamweaver?" The first step is defining your site. This will allow you to upload your website automatically through Adobe Dreamweaver.
This Adobe tutorial is one of many created to help the most basic or advanced users become proficient with Dreamweaver’s many features. In addition to the information provided in the video, if you are creating a website using GoDaddy or a similar hosting site, you must go through a few additional steps to ensure that your fire transfer protocol (FTP) works properly.
First, you must go to Advanced: Remote Info and click FTP and you are given the following options:
FTP Host: This number is listed on your hosting site. Login to your host account and it should be on the main screen under Account Summary: Server IP Address. It should look like 98.85.155.16.
Host Directory: Leave this blank
Login/Password: The username and password that you use to login to your hosting account. In addition, you
must click Passive FTP.
Now that you have your FTP and your root folder (where you have the template saved) set up, you are ready to
edit the content of the template.
